Your average Spanish business owner works longer
Running a small business in Spain is more than
work it is a lifestyle choice too.

You should except with any new business to work very hard during the
first few years until you are established.  Most people operate ventures
which are geared toward the tourism sector in Spain. Small bars and
cafés require long hours if work especially in the tourism hot spots.

You should expect to be working when everyone else is enjoying the
beach and having fun.  Obviously weekends, evenings and late nights are
normal and forget bank holidays as these can be the peak times.

Do realise that building up a good customer base takes more time than
at home as most of your customers will be tourists.  Success may not
come for three seasons as you wait for old customers to return.  You
need to build up three times the number of regulars as you would in your
home town and this takes many working hours.

It is not uncommon for people to give up after a few weeks and head
for the beach if customers are not banging on the door.  Be realistic and
allow enough time - do your marketing.

This is a true story about getting working hours wrong in Spain

Someone buys a very successful Spanish Tapas cafeteria / bar which
was heaving every lunch time offering an excellent menu of the day at 10
€.  Peak business was from 2pm until 4pm grossing over 3,500€ each
week.  The premises also enjoyed a low rent making the profit very nice
thank you.

The new owners an English couple, came to Spain to enjoy the beach
and only work when they wanted, but needed a good income to keep up
the lifestyle.  A good move then, to buy an established profitable concern.

The first thing they did was change the name to an English one and
changed the menu to what can only be described as a 1980´s Sunday
supplement dinner party menu.  Peach Melba, Spag Bols and things in
puff pastry etc.

The menu was only written in English!   And here is the crunch, they did
not open at lunch times so they could be on the beach, did not take
bookings and opened at 8pm Monday to Friday.  If they did not get a
customer by 9pm they shut shop and went to another bar for the rest of
the night.

When the business closed they blamed the agent, the previous owner,
the Spanish!  A classic example of working to suit rather than what the
business needed.

Imagine if they had employed Spanish staff, kept the menu the same
and opened the same hours.  They would have been able to go to the
beach late afternoons and drink in another bar every night plus made a
good living.  At the end of the day they got just what they deserved.

These premises are now very successful opening to meet demand
and appealing to a niche market, but then the new owners were realistic
and did their homework and work long hours.
