What is a Gestoria and what do they do?

A Gestoria (pronounced Hestoria) is a firm qualified to recognised levels to obtain
and apply for licences, permits, certificates and complete all manner of legally
required documents and paperwork requiring authorisation which Spain is so
famous for.  They are highly qualified and respected with years of training.

This can be anything from the transfer of a car into a new owners name to
applying for a licence to open a business.  Much of this can be also done by a lawyer
or even yourself, but some things should only be done by a Gestor to avoid delays
and errors.  Your lawyer will have a good working relationship with a local Gestor
and can either deal with this for you or recommend a suitable one to you who should
be able to speak good English.  Fees and charges are usually very reasonable.

Do be careful if you are recommended a Benidorm Gestoria firm by another bar
owner as they can be overwhelmed by the amount of paperwork they have to handle
which can lead to late payments and returns which may incur charges or even fines.
Shop around is the best advice.

Your Gestor will be able to help you to file an income tax declaration and will know
the best way to deal with things and which civil servant to approach when the
Spanish bureaucracy backfires on you.  They are often well known at the Benidorm
local official offices and town hall and have good relationships built over many years
so know exactly how to fast track the system.  They charge small prices in
comparison to what  they actually achieve for their clients.

Once you have been living in Spain a while and learn the system there is much you
can take back from your Gestoria and do yourself to save money but in the early days
of life in Spain it is best to leave it to them.

Although a Gestoria will advise you on what you can claim and what you should
not claim when completing tax forms or allowances for income tax, it is you who
signs the form and you are liable for your own declarations in all official dealings.
They are accountants as such and are great for a simple sole trader in a little bar.
BUT your Gestor is not a Lawyer or Tax Consultant and in some specialist areas it
may be prudent to seek the advise of a more qualified professional.  Tax in Spain is
complicated especially for foreigners and requires careful planning.
